Ship of Tolerance Returns ⛵️

The Ship of Tolerance from Oakville Galleries
Oakville Galleries is relaunching the Ship of Tolerance for the 2026 season this Friday, May 22, at noon in Gairloch Gardens. The 60-foot sculpture, created by renowned artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, features sails painted by local schoolchildren exploring ideas of tolerance and community.
This year, 900 students are painting new sails for the ship, which first appeared in Oakville in 2025 with artwork from 2,000 children. The anti-war installation has already won the Visit Oakville Tourism Award and a regional collaboration award.
The relaunch event includes remarks from artist Emilia Kabakov, Minister Stan Cho, and Mayor Rob Burton, plus a live painting project with hundreds of local students. The exhibition will be on display until the end of September, so you have lots of time to check it out.
Trunk Sale Meets Food Drive 🛍
The Oakville Community Association is hosting a trunk sale and food drive on Saturday, May 30 at the Holiday Inn on Argus Road, running from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
About 40 sellers will be set up with items they can fit in their vehicle trunks. Anyone who stops by is asked to bring a non-perishable food item for donation to a local food bank.
OCA president Michael Reid says the event is a chance for residents to hunt for deals while supporting local families at the same time.
Fashion Pop-Up Benefits Local Kids 👗
An all-female philanthropic group called the Party of Seven is hosting a discount fashion pop-up at Midtown Golf from June 3 to 6, with merchandise from local store TOCCA FINITA marked down 60 to 80 per cent.
Half the proceeds go to Food4Kids Halton, which provides weekend food packages to elementary students facing food insecurity. Since 2023, the group has raised nearly $200,000 for the charity, funding more than 13,000 food bags for local kids.
The pop-up runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and accepts cash or debit only. It follows an April fundraiser at Oakville Golf Club that brought in close to $45,000 for the same cause.

Oakville Student Wins at World Science Fair 🏆

Imran Allarakhia, a grade 10 student from Oakville, just picked up two awards at the world's largest youth science competition in Phoenix. His robotics project, CareBotix in Motion II, earned him a Fourth Grand Award and a special recognition from the International Council on Systems Engineering.
The project is a platform-agnostic robotics system that combines advanced manipulation, autonomous navigation, and social interaction. Allarakhia was one of 15 Canadian students to win at the International Science and Engineering Fair, where 1,727 finalists from 67 countries competed.
Team Canada walked away with six Grand Awards and eight Special Awards. Another Oakville student, Maria Polyanska, also earned recognition through a regional delegation for her atmospheric and marine sensing platform.
A Racecar at Fortinos? 🏎️
Shoppers at the Neyagawa Boulevard Fortinos last week were greeted by an unusual sight in the parking lot: a full-sized dragster racecar parked out front.
Veteran racer Shawna Woudstra brought her machine to support a charity barbecue for Pilgram Wood elementary school's music and athletic programs. Students sold burgers and hot dogs while families lined up to snap photos with the car and hear Woudstra talk racing.
Woudstra, who started racing at age 8 following in her mechanic father's footsteps, now competes in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series with Fortinos backing her second season. The visit came ahead of her debut race over the Victoria Day weekend as part of Fortinos' Fuel for Kids program.
