The Art of Phulkari Embroidery

The Art of Phulkari Embroidery

Discover the history, stories, and cultural significance of Phulkari embroidery by learning the traditional darning stitch with artist Rafia Shafiq. Participants will explore the origins and meaning of this craft through the artist's research and practice, and examine embroidered pieces from her own collection.

Each participant receives a pre-drawn motif on khaddar fabric sourced from artisans in Pakistan who practice Phulkari embroidery as their livelihood. A variety of thread colours will be available to create a personal colour palette. After an introduction to the stories and traditions behind Phulkari, participants will learn the darning stitch and work on their own embroidery with guidance throughout the session.

No prior embroidery experience is required. Reading glasses are recommended for close-up work.

All materials are provided. Each participant takes their embroidered hoop home, along with additional threads to continue their work if unfinished. A $10 cafe drink voucher is included in the ticket price.
