Artists Celebrating Canada Art Show Opens at the Oakville Art Society
Sixteen artists took the same subject, Canada, and the results are hanging together at the Oakville Art Society until October 30. "Artists Celebrating Canada" is a show and sale of paintings, collages and sculptures, and the opening reception runs Sunday, October 25 from 11am to 5pm at 560 Bronte Road.
The work reaches well past landscape painting. Michelle de Villiers built a ceramic series of 26 Canadian animals, an A to Z that takes in a walrus, an arctic fox and a snowshoe hare. Shelly Gray painted childhood television icons, Mr. Dressup, Casey and Rusty among them. Louise King and Janet Brown-McIsaac went to the Canadian Shield and the Tofino rainforest, and Jill MacInnes put Bronte Creek on canvas.
The show has an Oakville origin story. Lead artist Judy Mayer-Grieve was accepted to exhibit in New York City and turned the offer down, choosing instead to pull this group of Canadian artists together here. 15 per cent of every painting sold goes to the Halton Learning Foundation.
The complete collection and the original painting raffle draw are both revealed at Sunday's reception. The exhibition itself opened October 19 and runs to October 30, so there is still time during the week if Sunday is already spoken for.
