Construction Starts on Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Expansion
Construction has started on the expansion of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, a project that will add 111 inpatient beds and about 79,000 square feet of renovated space once it is finished at the end of 2027.
The province is covering more than $154 million of the cost. Halton Healthcare, which runs the hospital, serves close to 400,000 people in Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills, and the new beds are meant to create more acute care capacity for those communities.
The work goes into shelled space that already exists inside the hospital. The province says building into space that is already there makes the expansion faster and less expensive than putting up something new. About 200 construction jobs come with the project while it is underway.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones was at the hospital to mark the start of the work. Halton Healthcare president and CEO Melissa Farrell said the additional beds will "help reduce wait times, ease system pressures, and support safe, high quality care close to home."
What the expansion includes
111 new inpatient beds, about 79,000 square feet of renovated space, more than $154 million in provincial funding, roughly 200 construction jobs, and a completion date at the end of 2027.
The Oakville project is one piece of a provincial commitment of about $64 billion for more than 50 hospital projects over the next 10 years. Halton Healthcare is also getting over $1.7 million this year through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund for repairs and upgrades across its three hospitals.
