Oakville Road Closures in October: The Full List and Detours
Anyone driving through downtown Oakville or the west end over the next six weeks should plan for detours. Road closures begin October 3 and run through to November 14, with a festival, a half marathon and four construction projects landing in the same stretch of the calendar.
The first closure is short. George Street shuts between Lakeshore Road East and Church Street on Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Downtown Oakville BIA's Acorn Festival. The Town points drivers to Lakeshore Road East, Thomas Street, Church Street and Dunn Street instead.
Sunday morning is the bigger one. The Oakville Half Marathon closes roads between 6 and 11 a.m. on October 4: Lakeshore Road West in two sections (Great Lakes Boulevard to Bronte Road, and Third Line to Dorval Drive), Old Lakeshore Road, and Bronte Road between Lakeshore Road West and Ontario Street. The eastbound lane of Ontario Street closes between Bronte Road and East Street, and East Street loses its northbound lane between Marine Drive and Ontario Street. Local access is not available through any of the closure areas, so the Town has designated Third Line, Rebecca Street and Great Lakes Boulevard as the main detours.
The construction closures run longer
Four of the Town's road and sewer projects start the week of October 5. Westminster Drive closes to through traffic between Lakeshore Road West and Hixon Street from 8 a.m. October 5 until 5 p.m. October 9 for storm sewer and resurfacing work, with access from Lakeshore Road West limited while crews work at the intersection. Margaret Drive closes between Elmwood Road and Mary Street over the same five days, along with Elmwood Road between Margaret Drive and Slater Crescent, both for site servicing.
Two closures carry on well past that week. Sherin Drive is shut between Rebecca Street and Bridge Road from October 5 until November 14 while Halton Region improves a wastewater main, and Macdonald Road closes between Trafalgar Road and Reynolds Street from October 7 to October 23 for site servicing. Local access stays open on both, though driveway access on Macdonald Road may be limited at times, and the Town says it will notify residents whose properties are directly affected.
