Towne Square Construction Starts the Week of September 14

The open plaza at the centre of Downtown Oakville is about to disappear behind hoarding. Construction on the Towne Square Revitalization Project is tentatively set to begin the week of September 14, and the work runs through to September 2027.

The Town is spending $7.5 million to rebuild a square that has been a downtown gathering spot for more than 35 years. The design adds amphitheatre-style seating, a water feature, raised planters and seating areas, new trees, an updated central lawn, decorative lighting, and accessible paving throughout the space.

Reconstruction was originally approved back in 2018, then paused when the pandemic arrived in 2020. Council paused it again in October 2025 for more consultation, and in May of this year approved an Optimal Phasing Plan shaped by what downtown businesses said about construction impacts.

Getting around the downtown during the work

Businesses inside active construction zones stay open. Decorative hoarding will ring the work areas with designated entry and exit points, wayfinding signage will point people toward open shops and amenities, and construction staging and worker parking move off-site to keep them out of the core. Access to the CIBC parking lot and Municipal Lot 3 stays open.

Work pauses for the holidays in November and resumes in early 2027, weather permitting. The Downtown Oakville BIA has confirmed its Holiday Tree Lighting still happens in Towne Square this season, with its other winter events moving to Centennial Square at 120 Navy Street. A portion of George Street between Lakeshore Road East and Church Street closes from spring 2027 until the end of construction. The Millennium Tower Clock comes down before crews arrive, goes into storage, and returns when the square reopens.
