Oakville Fire Prevention Week Kickoff Set For September 26
Oakville Fire is opening its training campus to the public on Saturday, September 26, with fire and rescue demonstrations, a smoke room simulator and a junior firefighter challenge kids can run themselves. The event goes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1144 South Service Road West. Admission is free and no registration is needed.
Sparky the Fire Dog is making an appearance, and there are inflatable air rides, a junior firefighter water squirt and fire safety games. Kids can check out the fire trucks, including Pumper 8, the Town's antique truck. McDonald's Restaurants Dorval Crossing is covering free hot dogs, while supplies last, with support from RioCan Oakville Place and the Oakville Parent-Child Centre.
The kickoff leads into Fire Prevention Week, which runs October 4 to 10. This year's theme is "Charge into fire safety. Safe charging is a superpower", and it focuses on everyday charging habits and the risk of lithium-ion battery fires. A Test Your Smoke Alarm Station is set up on site ahead of Test Your Smoke Alarm Day on Monday, September 28.
Two things worth bringing: a refillable water bottle for the water stations around the site, and a non-perishable food item for the Kerr Street Mission. Come hungry for the hot dogs!
Getting there
Free parking and an Oakville Transit shuttle run from Bronte GO station, and the last shuttle leaves Bronte GO at 2:45 p.m. Parking at the training campus is reserved for people with limited mobility or medical conditions, and parking along South Service Road is prohibited and will be enforced. Service animals are welcome, but other pets should stay home.
