New Wyecroft Road Bridge Between Oakville and Burlington Opens November 30

Drivers who cut between Bronte Village and south Burlington have a new crossing coming. Halton Region says the Wyecroft Road bridge over Bronte Creek is on track to open to traffic on November 30, with the road extension that goes with it running from Burloak Drive in the west to Bronte Road in the east.

The work is about 97 per cent complete, according to Lee Anne Jones, the region's commissioner of public works. What is left is the final paving of the westbound bridge and the Bronte Road intersection, swapping the temporary traffic signals there for permanent ones, pavement markings, and railings and other finishing work. The remaining work depends on the weather holding.

The $117 million project broke ground in October 2023 and has stayed on budget, with the province contributing $53 million. The idea goes back much further than the shovels. The Town of Oakville's environmental assessment study for the crossing dates to 1994, and regional funding was approved in 2019.

Once it opens, the region expects the new section to carry more than 4,000 trips a day, with roughly 2,000 vehicles in the afternoon peak alone. The pressure it is meant to take off shows up on Rebecca Street, on Lakeshore Road through Bronte Village and on the QEW.

Ward 1 town and regional councillor Jonathan McNeice called it "the biggest infrastructure investment our area has seen in a quarter century," and said it will also serve the new Costco opening on Wyecroft.

What else comes with it

The Halton Region project includes a new four-lane roadway, multi-use pathways, on-road bike lanes and a new water main to support water supply in Oakville. The region also expects shorter drives to the Appleby and Bronte GO stations.
