New Oakville High School Will Launch APEX Program for Student-Athletes

Student-athletes across Ontario will be able to apply to a new sports academy at Oakville's next high school, and applications open on October 30.

The Halton District School Board is launching the Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence, known as APEX, at the new secondary school going up at 4020 Sixth Line. Both open in September 2027. The program is aimed at competitive athletes, particularly those already competing at the provincial or national level, and it is open to eligible secondary students anywhere in Ontario rather than Halton alone.

The point is to put schoolwork and training on one schedule instead of leaving students to juggle the two. APEX builds sport science, performance technology and data analytics into the course work itself, aimed at post-secondary programs and jobs in what the board calls the $30-billion Canadian sports industry.

Facilities are a big part of the pitch. The new campus will have three gymnasiums, a fitness and weight room, a practice field and a domed turf field.

"By pairing rigorous academics with specialized sport science and state-of-the-art facilities, we are opening dynamic new pathways that empower students to excel both in their sport and in their future academic and professional careers," said Curtis Ennis, the board's chief executive officer.

How to learn more

Two information events are scheduled. The HDSB secondary school open house runs Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Craig Kielburger Secondary School in Milton, with staff on hand to answer questions about the new Oakville school and APEX. An APEX virtual livestream follows on Monday, October 26, and the link to join will be posted to the APEX webpage by mid-October.

Applications open October 30 for the first intake, which covers Grade 9 and 10 students starting in 2027.
