Oakville's New High School Needs a Name and Anyone Can Suggest One

Oakville's next high school does not have a name yet, and the Halton District School Board is asking the public to supply one. The school at 4020 Sixth Line is set to open in September 2027, and anyone with an idea has until September 13 to send it in.

Submissions are open to students, parents and guardians, and community members. Ideas can go in through the board's online form or by mail to the Communications and Engagement Department at the HDSB office in Burlington.

What the board is looking for

The criteria are posted on the HDSB School Naming page. A name should reflect the geography, history, local environment, culture or traditions of the community, be distinct from other school names in Halton, be secular, and be expected to stand the test of time. It can honour a real person of historical significance to Halton, or someone whose contribution to society is recognized across Canada.

Some names are off the table. Current HDSB employees, anyone currently holding elected office, corporate and product names, and any figure known to have caused harm to others are all excluded.

Every submission goes to a committee of students, parents and guardians, and staff, which narrows the ideas down to a shortlist. Trustees then choose one and send it to the Ministry of Education for final approval. The board says the name will be shared community wide once that approval comes through.

How to submit a name

Online through the HDSB submission form, or by mail to Communications and Engagement Dept., Halton District School Board, PO Box 5005 STN LCD 1, Burlington, Ont., L7R 3Z2. The deadline is September 13, 2026.
