U17 World Challenge Opens in Oakville With Sixteen Mile Nearly Full

Two Oakville teenagers pulled on a Canada jersey at their home rink on Sunday night. The U17 World Hockey Challenge opened at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex on November 1, almost a year after Hockey Canada named Oakville as host, and the 1,500 seat arena was close to sold out for both games.

Kane Cloutier of Oakville dressed for Canada White in the 3:30 pm opener against Czechia. Canada went up 2-0 in the first period, then gave up five unanswered goals in the second and went to the intermission down 5-2. Captain Maddox Schultz, projected to go first overall at the 2028 NHL Draft, pulled one back early in the third, and Canada answered a late Czech goal to make the final 6-4.

"It was pretty surreal coming back to my hometown rink," Cloutier said after the game. "I know this place inside and out and I have a lot of people here watching so it was pretty cool."

Canada Red, with Oakville's Landon Roulston in the lineup, played Finland at 7:30 pm and lost 5-1. The Finnish goaltender made more than 40 saves. Canada was down 2-0 midway through the second before a power play goal cut the gap, and Finland scored early in the third and added two more.

"We made a couple mistakes. We went down by a couple of goals, but I definitely saw a lot of fight in this group," Roulston said.

Two losses on opening night, and the building still filled up for both. The tournament runs through Saturday, November 7, and game times are on the Hockey Canada schedule.
