New Pedestrian Bridges Are Coming to Oakville GO Station

Getting between platforms at Oakville GO is going to look different by the time the station renovation is finished. Brantford's ANC Modular Inc. has partnered with the Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture to build new pedestrian bridges and platform access buildings for the station, and the pieces will show up mostly finished.

Four buildings, plus bridges, elevator shafts, platform access stairs and canopies, are being built as prefabricated volumetric modules, which means they are put together in a factory and checked for quality and fit before they ever reach the rail corridor. Installation then happens during future planned service disruptions, once the site is prepped to receive them.

Kenaidan Murphy is the construction manager on the Metrolinx project and has already started rebuilding platforms on site. "Oakville GO is a busy site where every hour of on-site work matters," said Andrew Neill, founder, president and chief executive of ANC Modular.

The bridges are one piece of a much larger job. Metrolinx's plan for the station also covers four elevators and four staircases reaching the platforms and the parking structure, six additional bus platforms, tactile platform edges and digital signage, a secured bike shelter, and repaving of the parking lots. Oakville is the busiest station on the Lakeshore West line.

All of it is about capacity. Metrolinx says the renovation prepares the station for trains arriving as often as every 15 minutes during the busiest travel hours, part of its wider plan to expand GO service.
