Dog Days of Ontario Culture Days: Oakville 2026

Micah Lexier’s Dog Days of Ontario Culture Days is a multi-location experience exploring the ritual and culture of dogs and their humans. Dog Days of Ontario Culture Days consists of a pair of independent yet thematically linked components: Guess Your Dog’s Age or Weight: A performance in which a “carnival guesser” attempts to accurately guess a dog’s age or weight. In exchange for a donation to a local dog charity, dog owners will receive a custom-minted coin as a memento of having participated in the project. A Portrait of The Person Making a Portrait of Your Dog: A live drawing activation where visitors receive a free sketch of their dog by a local sketch artist, while a second artist sketches the first artist at work. Dog owners get to keep their sketch, while Micah Lexier keeps the second sketch, to be included in a subsequent publication. This edition of Dog Days of Ontario Culture Days is produced in partnership with the Town of Oakville. Please note: We oversell these events to make sure that the greatest number of people have an opportunity to attend. Any remaining space will be opened up to those who sign up and are present on site at the event. Pet Portraits are first come, first served. Canadian Art Hop: In Conversation: Ali Cherri’s To Fall, Patiently

Join Oakville Galleries’ Interim Executive Director, Jenifer Papararo, and Public Programs & Engagement Manager, Isabella Springett, for a guided walkthrough of To Fall, Patiently, a solo exhibition by artist and film-maker Ali Cherri in Gairloch Gardens. In dialogue, Papararo and Springett will guide visitors through Cherri's exhibition, taking a close look at each work and exploring the histories, landscapes, and material traces that shape the artist's thinking. Through a conversational approach, visitors are invited to ask questions, share observations, and engage with the ideas that emerge throughout the exhibition. The tour will consider themes of memory, conflict, colonial histories, and our evolving relationship to land and material culture. Oakville Galleries is offering an immersive drawing and painting series for beginner and intermediate artists. Each week, students will complete at least one guided artwork through instructor demonstrations, individualized support, and constructive feedback. The course covers oil pastel drawings, watercolour studies, acrylic paintings, and abstract collaging. Projects feature still lifes, florals, fruit, and landscapes. This three-session program invites participants to learn the reduction method by capturing the textures of November’s final foliage. Participants will dive into the technicalities of the process, emphasizing strategic planning and registration printing. The course focuses on carving in stages, making intentional decisions, and breaking designs into multiple layers as the block is gradually transformed. Miigis: Underwater Panther

Dance Miigis is a contemporary dance work inspired by the epic journey of the Anishinaabe along ancient water routes from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. Choreographed and directed by Sandra Laronde in collaboration with the performers, the 50-minute performance explores themes of origin, memory, spirit beings, and the Seven Fire Prophecies through striking movement, music, and visual design. Red Sky Performance is an Indigenous-led company creating bold new works of dance, theatre, music, and multimedia. The company brings contemporary Indigenous arts and culture to audiences across Canada and around the world.

Dangerous Vacancies

Dangerous Vacancies is a live performance by choreographer and playwright Sid Ryan Eilers (they/them), created and performed with the ensemble of EILERS Dance Theatre. The work traces what unfolds when everything falls away, exploring grief, bliss, and aliveness through movement and text. Like stars returning to a darkened sky, the performance listens for the hum of continuing. EILERS Dance Theatre, founded in 2024, creates interdisciplinary, story-driven work rooted in queer and gender-expansive embodiment and transformation. The company centres queer, trans, and gender-expansive voices, bringing together choreography, voice, music, and scenography to create physically rigorous, emotionally charged, and visually distinct performances. The work is grounded in Eilers' 25 years across dance, theatre, and text-based creation. In these performances, the body holds memory, transformation is lived in real time, and personal and collective histories surface through movement and text. Based in Toronto, the company is touring nationally.
