🚗 A New Uber Competitor Enters Oakville

Hopp, a ride-hailing service backed by European platform Bolt, has officially expanded into Oakville and the rest of Halton Region as part of its wider rollout across the GTA. After launching in early 2025, the company positioned itself as a more affordable alternative to Uber and Lyft. Now with service in over 16 municipalities, including Burlington and Mississauga, Hopp is aiming to make getting around the region a bit easier.

General manager David Riggs says Hopp keeps fares low by taking a smaller cut from drivers, which also helps boost their earnings. The company also says they are focused on safety, with 24/7 monitoring, background checks, and trip tracking. They hope to offer more flexibility for riders and better opportunities for drivers, giving Oakville commuters another option to get from A to B without breaking the bank.

🍺 Beertown Unveils Non-Alcoholic Craft IPA

Beertown, a go-to spot for craft beer lovers in Oakville, has teamed up with Side Launch and Equals Brewing to release Everyday IPA, a new non-alcoholic option now on tap at its Oakville and Burlington locations. The drink is inspired by Side Launch’s Anyday Session IPA and aims to bring all the flavour without the alcohol.

It’s the first time a restaurant-led team in Canada has launched a non-alcoholic IPA. Brewed with citrus and tropical notes and sitting under 0.5% alcohol, Everyday IPA fits right in with the growing trend of low- or no-alcohol choices. Beertown will be serving it through March 10.

🌍 Earthquake Gently Hits Oakville

If you felt a brief shake late Tuesday night, you weren’t alone. Earthquakes Canada confirmed a magnitude 3.7 earthquake at 10:57pm on January 28, centred near Orillia at a depth of five kilometres. Reports came in from across Southern Ontario, though many Oakville residents didn’t notice anything.

There were no reports of damage or injuries. While earthquakes of this size are uncommon in the region, they do happen from time to time. A smaller 1.5 magnitude shock was recorded in Burlington just a few weeks earlier.

🏒 Oakville's Arjun Nanubhai Eyes OHL Draft

Oakville’s Arjun Nanubhai is making a strong name for himself in minor hockey and is now considered a top prospect for this spring’s OHL Draft. A former Oakville Ranger, the skilled centre has been thriving with the Mississauga Senators this season and was recently ranked number one in the January draft rankings by Eliteprospects.

Nanubhai credits his explosive skating for helping him read the play and set up teammates. He says he models his game after Nathan MacKinnon, who plays a fast, two-way style. With the OHL Cup approaching and his draft stock rising, Nanubhai is quickly becoming one of Oakville’s standout young athletes.

🐾 Pet Spotlight: Meet Nico

Photo from hsomh.ca

If squeaky toys and stuffies could talk, they’d tell you Nico is their biggest fan. This one-year-old Shepherd mix is playful, people-loving, and always up for a game of fetch or a cuddle session. He’s super food motivated, which makes training a breeze, and he’s already house trained thanks to his previous home.

Nico’s still finding his confidence in the shelter, but under the nerves is a smart, affectionate pup who just wants a home where he can relax, learn, and be himself. He’d do best in an adult-only home that understands dog body language and is ready to keep building on his leash skills. Give him some patience, a few squeaky toys, and a comfy spot on the couch, and Nico will be your best friend in no time.
