🛒 A Major New Grocer

Nations Fresh Foods in Hamilton
A major new grocery store is headed to Oakville Place, with Nations Fresh Food set to open inside the former Hudson’s Bay space at 240 Leighland Ave.
The supermarket will cover more than 60,000 square feet and is expected to welcome shoppers in fall 2026, giving the mall a very different kind of anchor tenant.
Known for its fresh produce, meats, seafood, baked goods and pantry staples, Nations Fresh will also bring international grocery items, prepared foods and hot meals under one roof. With existing Ontario locations in Vaughan, Mississauga, Brampton and Toronto, the chain’s Oakville debut should make mall errands a lot more delicious.
🛍️ Desi Mandi Opens
In more grocery news, there is a new destination for authentic South Asian groceries with the opening of Desi Mandi in the heart of Kerr Village.
The store brings a wide range of essentials, including fresh produce, spices, lentils, snacks, frozen foods and specialty ingredients sourced from India, Pakistan and across South Asia, making it easier for locals to find culturally specific items close to home.
The opening reflects growing demand for diverse grocery options in Oakville, especially as more residents look for authentic ingredients without leaving town. Customers can expect weekly deliveries of fresh Indian vegetables alongside pantry staples and ready to cook meals, with opening promotions running through March.
🌿 Halton Pushes For Local Say
Halton Region is calling for a stronger local voice as the Government of Ontario moves to merge 36 conservation authorities into nine regional bodies. Council unanimously backed a motion urging more consultation and municipal control, as most of Halton would join a new Western Lake Ontario authority under the proposed changes.
Local leaders say they support better coordination, but worry about losing influence over conservation lands like Mount Nemo Conservation Area and other community assets. Environmental group Ontario Nature also raised concerns about weakened protections, setting up a debate that will likely continue as details unfold.

🚧 Wyecroft Bridge Progress

New photos from the Wyecroft Road bridge project give a clear look at how things are coming along, and there’s noticeable progress since the last update. One of the two bridges appears close to finished, while work on the second is moving toward a concrete pour, a big next step in the build.
The crossing will connect Oakville and Burlington over Bronte Creek, adding a new four-lane route to help ease traffic and improve access to Bronte and Appleby GO stations. With bike lanes, multi-use paths and water upgrades included, it’s shaping up to be a well-rounded project, and for now, it looks like crews are still on track for a November 2026 finish.
🌊 Bronte Waterfront Meeting
A packed house at Walton United Church turned out last Tuesday night as Phase 3 of the Bronte Waterfront Strategy was unveiled, drawing strong interest and plenty of feedback from residents.
The plan, aimed at improving the waterfront experience, heads to Oakville council in mid-May, but one idea quickly became the focal point, rotating the Metro Marine building to open up space for events and markets.
That proposal raised concerns, especially from residents worried about blocked views and impacts on boaters who rely on the site. Consultants say those needs were considered, while also pointing to broader upgrades like wider promenades, sports courts, patios and winter skating loops.
