Oakville is throwing a free community party on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate the newly expanded Sixteen Mile Sports Complex.

The site now includes a 65,000 square-foot community centre with a fitness centre, gym, and program spaces, plus an 18,000-square-foot Oakville Public Library branch. Aquatic facilities and outdoor courts for basketball, pickleball, tennis, and beach volleyball are set to open this summer.

O’Neill Reflects On Olympic Experience 🏒

Olympics Canada photo

In an interview with Oakville News, Oakville’s Kristin O’Neill looked back on a whirlwind Olympic debut at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, where she helped Canada bring home silver.

She described the experience as surreal, full of “pinch me moments,” made even more special by having her parents, sisters, partner, friends, and extended supporters there with her.

O’Neill said the gold medal game brought both pride and heartbreak. She scored Canada’s lone goal, a shorthanded finish she called instinctive after joining Laura Stacey on the rush instead of changing. The late U.S. tying goal and overtime loss were tough, but O’Neill said Canada was proud of its effort, especially after many had counted them out.

A painful finish, but one remarkable Olympic debut for Oakville’s own.

Blaze Fire Academy Opens Applications 🚒

Young women aged 15 to 18 across Halton can now apply for Blaze Fire Academy, a free two-day program that gives participants hands-on experience in fire services. The academy runs August 6 and 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oakville's Fire Training Campus.

Up to 24 participants will be selected to take part in team-based activities including forcible entry, roof operations, fire hydrant competitions, and fire prevention training. The program is hosted jointly by fire departments in Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills.

Applications close June 23 at 4 p.m. The academy aims to introduce young women to career paths in fire services through immersive, hands-on learning.
