🗑️ New Garbage and Green Bins

Stock Image
Halton Region is rolling out wheeled garbage and organics carts to all homes by 2028, ending years of pilot testing. The shift aims to standardize waste collection across the region and improve efficiency.
Residents currently using bags will transition to the new cart system over the next few years. The change follows successful pilot programs that tested durability and resident feedback.
The Region says the carts reduce spillage, keep wildlife out, and make collection easier for crews. Specific rollout timelines for Oakville neighbourhoods will be announced as the program scales up.
Recycling blue bins will remain unchanged under Circular Materials Ontario, and any move to cart-based blue bins likely will not be considered until contract renewals around 2030 or 2031, leaving residents with a split system for several more years.
Halton Moves 34,000 Historical Items 🎨
Halton Region is working with local groups to transition its massive historical collection of 34,000 items into new homes across the area.
The effort ensures artifacts, documents, and heritage pieces remain accessible to residents while partnering with organizations better equipped to preserve and showcase them. It's a significant shift in how the region manages its shared history.
The transition keeps local heritage alive and gives communities direct stewardship over pieces that tell their own stories. Oakville residents can expect some of these artifacts to land closer to home as the process continues.
Oakville Teacher Sails Pacific 🌊

Oakville teacher Ruby Thornton is nearing Seattle after completing one of the toughest legs of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, spending more than 30 days crossing the North Pacific.
Sailing over 10,000 km from South Korea, Thornton and her Yacht Club Punta del Este team battled freezing temperatures, towering waves, and winds topping 130 km/h in a nonstop race known among crews as “The Big One.”
The race, which trains everyday people to become ocean sailors, began in August 2025 and spans 11 months and 74,000 km. Thornton, who signed on for the full journey, said the leg lived up to its reputation, with daily life made harder by constant motion and extreme conditions.
With Seattle marking a long-awaited reunion with family, she is now heading into the final stretch of a journey that has already pushed her far beyond the classroom, and well past her comfort zone.

Oakville Volunteers Honoured 🎉
Community Development Halton recognized several Oakville volunteers last week during a National Volunteer Week ceremony, highlighting their impact across local organizations.
Teresa D’Alfonso, Lily Wang, and Melanie Laura Rebelo received the Cheers for Volunteers Award, while Eleanor Ramuscak and Abigail Laulman earned the Halton Volunteer Impact Award for leadership in food security and crisis support.
The Heather Thompson Volunteer Excellence Award went to Laila Hulays for her work with seniors and food bank clients, including launching a social program and contributing over 400 volunteer hours.
From expanding school nutrition programs to supporting vulnerable residents, the group’s efforts continue to strengthen the community in meaningful ways, congratulations to all recognized for stepping up where it counts.
Honour your Bus Driver🚌
Halton Student Transportation Services is inviting Oakville families to recognize standout school bus drivers through its annual Outstanding School Bus Driver of the Year contest.
Parents and caregivers can submit nominations for drivers who go the extra mile to keep students safe, comfortable, and cared for on their daily rides.
All nominees will receive a certificate, with three drivers ultimately earning top honours across Halton. Nominations are open until June 5, giving families a few weeks to spotlight the drivers who make mornings and afternoons run a little smoother.
