Oakville Native Running Across Canada 🇨🇦

From James’ website

Oakville’s James Newman is turning an extraordinary personal story into a cross-country mission, running across Canada to raise $250,000 for the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada and help create scholarships for young people who have lost a parent or caregiver.

The 22-year-old began his 7,500-km journey in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, on May 18, taking on the equivalent of nearly 170 marathons and about 10 million steps.

The cause is deeply personal. James lost both parents when he was seven and was supported by grandparents, family, friends, and community members who helped him through that painful time. He has already raised more than $78,000, and even after an early injury forced him to pause, walk, and cycle while recovering, his mission has not changed.

James created a website where you can hear more about the “why” behind his mission, as well as follow his daily blogs, live location, and donate to the cause.

Country Roads Fundraiser at The Ranch 🤠

Home Suite Hope is hosting its first Country Roads Take Me Home fundraiser on Sunday, June 14 at The Ranch in Oakville, raising money for programs that help single parents transition out of homelessness.

The family-friendly event runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and features live music from country singer-songwriter Jessie T, line dancing lessons, and a Southern-style barbecue prepared by O'Conor Catering. Add-ons include cowboy hat branding and trail rides.

The Halton organization operates several housing support programs across the region, including Homeward Bound Halton and Haven to Home, which provide wraparound supports to help single parents and their children build long-term stability. It will be a fun evening for a great cause.

Sixteen Mile Sports Complex Opens 🏟️

Oakville has officially opened the expanded Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, turning what started as a pair of ice rinks in 2011 into a 65,000 square foot community hub with a library, pool, gym, and outdoor fields.

The facility on Neyagawa Boulevard in Glenorchy now includes an 18,000 square foot library branch, a swimming pool set to open this summer, a fitness centre, program spaces for seniors and youth, and a gymnasium. Outside, new sports fields join a skate park, cricket pitch, basketball and tennis courts, a bike pump track, and a fieldhouse.

Mayor Rob Burton says the town fast tracked the project to keep up with Ward 7's growth. The complex had a soft launch in March, with Saturday's ceremony marking the full opening.

Help Find 27 New Homes 🐱

The Humane Society of Oakville, Milton and Halton recently took in 27 cats and kittens from a single Milton home, after the household reached out to them for help. They range in age from three months to three years old, and none had received any prior medical care.

The influx of furry friends has unfortunately put additional strain on the shelter, which is already seeing higher intake numbers this year.

Getting the group the care they need is expected to cost around $30,000. Each animal will require a wellness exam, vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, microchipping, and ongoing daily care. The humane society is asking for community support through donations, adoptions, and volunteers to help get all 27 into loving homes.
