Towne Square Revamp Moving Forward 🏗

Artist concept of the revitalized Towne Square
Oakville council has approved a $6.5-million overhaul of Towne Square, the 35-year-old public space at the heart of downtown. Construction is tentatively set to begin this fall and run through late 2027.
The plan calls for a phased approach designed to keep businesses, residents, and visitors able to access the downtown throughout the work. Officials say shops and restaurants will stay open, with only occasional short-term closures arranged directly with those affected.
The redesigned square will feature expanded seating, a larger central lawn, upgraded lighting and paving, new trees for shade, and a signature water feature linking the space to Lakeshore Road.
Bronte Waterfront Vision Approved ⚖️

Strategy area for the Bronte Waterfront Strategy | Town of Oakville
In some related news, even more changes are coming to downtown.
Oakville council has unanimously backed a long-term strategy to transform the Bronte waterfront into a more walkable, four-season destination with new promenades, seasonal programming, and even a refrigerated skating loop.
The plan has already received some pushback. Residents at the condo overlooking the inner harbour want the area kept calm and quiet, with festivals and vendors concentrated farther from their building. A petition signed by 73 residents is asking council to preserve the inner harbour as a peaceful space.
At the centre of the debate is the town-owned Metro Marine building, which needs to be relocated for seawall work starting late 2027. The strategy calls for rotating the historic structure 90 degrees, but council is waiting until after October's election to decide.
June Events Calendar Drops 🎉
Oakville has released its June events calendar, packed with free and low-cost programs recognizing Indigenous History Month, Pride Month, Recreation and Parks Month, Bike Month, and Seniors Month.
Highlights include Stolen Childhoods, an exhibit at the Oakville Museum sharing residential school survivor stories, and The Historytellers Project celebrating 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences. A special screening of Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising with a live Q&A runs June 21 at Film.ca Cinemas.
Outdoor pool season kicks off this month, and the town is rolling out its Summer Fun Pass offering unlimited swims, skates, and sports for kids and youth. Residents can also log cycling trips in the Smart Commute app throughout June for a chance at gift cards.
Free drop-in programs include yoga, pickleball, rock climbing, and family activities across town. Lots to do in June!

YMCA Gets $100K Accessibility Boost 💝

YMCA of Oakville
The YMCA of Oakville just received a $100,000 donation from the RBC Foundation to help make the building more accessible for people with mobility and visual impairments.
The money will fund tactile floor indicators, automated doors, and entrance upgrades designed to make the space safer and easier to navigate. The YMCA serves more than 9,000 people each year and is working toward Gold-level accessibility certification through the Rick Hansen Foundation.
This is the second recent grant for the project. The Ontario Trillium Fund pitched in $160,000 last month, bringing the total funding to $260,000 for the accessibility overhaul.
Camp Dakota Raises $60,000 🎉
Front Line Outreach raised more than $60,000 at its annual fundraising dinner earlier this month, with all proceeds going to Camp Dakota, a free summer day camp for kids and teens in Oakville.
The May 13 event at Piper's Heath Golf Course included a silent auction, live auction, and raffle. The camp serves children aged five to 12 and youth aged 13 to 16, primarily from low-income and government-assisted housing communities across Oakville and the surrounding area.
Camp Dakota runs as a seven-week summer day camp and leadership program, offering participants access to recreation, mentorship, and supervised activities they might not otherwise experience.
