New Art At Sixteen Mile 🎨

Image from Town of Oakville

Oakville is adding a creative touch to the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, with a new public artwork set to debut on March 31.

The piece, called The Object of the Game by Toronto artist Micah Lexier, features 48 circles based on the sizes of different sports equipment. From a distance, it comes together like a constellation, tying back to all the activity inside the space.

It’s part of the Sixteen Mile expansion that’s been in the works, with the new community centre and library also opening at the end of the month.

A larger community celebration is planned for May, but the artwork itself will be ready to see right away.

A Volunteering Conversation 🤝

A new youth-led study across Halton is highlighting a gap between how students feel about volunteering and how hard it’s becoming to actually complete the required 40 hours.

About 80 per cent of students said they enjoy volunteering and see real value in it. But around 60 per cent also said it’s tough to balance those hours with school and personal life.

The biggest challenges are pretty practical. Many students pointed to lack of time, limited opportunities, and transportation issues. For some, language barriers, disabilities, or limited support at home make it even harder.

The group says the interest is clearly there. What’s missing is better support, more flexible options, and opportunities that actually fit into students’ lives.

Hanging by a Thread 🧵

There’s a new exhibit in Oakville putting textile art front and centre, and it’s open for anyone to check out.

“Hanging by a Thread” is now on at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre, featuring a wide mix of fabric-based pieces from the Oakville Fibre Artists. It’s their sixth show, and it brings together different styles and techniques all in one space.

The best part is it’s completely free, so you can drop in whenever it fits your schedule.

The exhibit runs until April 3, with daytime and evening hours during the week and shorter hours on weekends.

Monty’s Story 🐕

Monty had been at the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton for 443 days, waiting for someone to take him home.

Staff shared his story ahead of a special walk-in weekend, hoping to finally find the right match. What happened next was bigger than expected. The post took off online, with people across the community sharing it, commenting, and rooting for Monty to get adopted.

There was a real push to make sure he didn’t get overlooked again.

And it worked.

Monty has now been adopted by Dave, turning what had been a long wait into a genuinely feel-good ending. See the post! 👇

$12K For Local Charities 💙

Three Oakville charities are getting a boost this month thanks to a group of locals coming together to give back.

100 Guys Who Care raised $12,000 at their latest meeting, with members voting on which organizations to support. Arthouse received the largest donation, taking home $10,000 to support its free arts programs for kids and teens.

Two other groups, Kids Health Links and Kozy Kids, also received funding, helping them continue their work in the community.

It’s part of the group’s ongoing effort to support local causes each quarter, with money going directly to organizations making a difference here in town.
