👑 The 7 Kingdoms of Oakville

A new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has just come out. Set about 90 years before the original series, the show follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg as they journey across Westeros, running into knights, kings, and classic Targaryen drama.

To celebrate its release, we are imagining Oakville’s neighbourhoods as their own “Seven Kingdoms”. Which Kingdom are you a part of?

❄️ Kingdom of the North (Glen Abbey)
This chilly, forested hood embodies the stoic Starks: endless trails for brooding walks, brutal winter potholes, and families plotting over backyard BBQs. Winter is always coming... especially traffic from the 403.

⛰️ Kingdom of Mountain and Vale (Bronte)
High cliffs and harbors mimic the Eyrie exclusive, lofty views from million-dollar condos. Locals perch like Arryns, sipping lattes while judging bridge traffic below. Moon Door? Nah, it's the GO train exit.

🏞️ Kingdom of the Isles and Rivers (West Oak Trails)
Ironborn vibes for this watery enclave near Sixteen Mile Creek: boaters raid marinas like reavers, and rivers flood faster than a failed real estate flip. What is dead may never die... unless the sump pump quits.

🪨 Kingdom of the Rock (Clearview)
Lannister wealth hoarded in gated estates, paywalls via "private roads" and gold-plated Teslas. A Lannister always pays his property taxes, and hears the HOA roaring for lawn perfection.

🌷 Kingdom of the Reach (Eastlake)
Gardener plenty in this lush, fertile sprawl: orchards turned subdivisions bursting with farmers' markets and overpriced kale smoothies. Knights joust at Whole Foods; the grass is literally greener (and hydro-seeded).

⛈️ Kingdom of the Stormlands (Bronte Park)
Durrandon fury in thundery skies and muddy trails, stormy soccer fields where kids battle like warriors. Storm's End? More like Storm's Soggy Picnic Shelter, raging against GTA weekend invaders.

☀️ Principality of Dorne (Downtown Oakville)
Sultry Martell swagger along Lakeshore Road: spicy patios, unyielding sun (or lake-effect snow), and paramours plotting at craft cider bars. Unbowed, unbent, unbroken... by craft beer shortages.

Episode one is already out, with the second being released on Sunday.

📝 Meaning of Home Contest is Back

Habitat for Humanity Canada has launched its 2026 Meaning of Home contest, inviting students in Grades 4 to 6 to write about what home means to them. For every poem or essay submitted, $10 will be donated to the student’s local Habitat chapter, with three national winners earning $30,000 grants to fund nearby housing projects.

Now in its 19th year, the contest raised $356,000 in 2025 from 17,500 entries. Habitat hopes to see 1,250 submissions from Halton this time around, helping families access safe, stable housing. The deadline to submit is February 20.

🎟️ Cineplex Brings Back $5 Tuesdays

Cineplex’s $5 Tuesday deal has returned across Ontario, including at Oakville locations, running now through February 24. Moviegoers can grab general admission tickets and small popcorns for just $5 each, making it a $20 night out for two or $40 for a family of four, when buying in-theatre.

🎬 Here are some cool titles playing right now:

  • Avatar: Fire and Ash (so good)

  • Marty Supreme

  • Zootopia 2

  • The Housemaid

🏫 Oakville Teacher Earns National History Honour

Ian Duncan of Garth Webb Secondary School has been awarded the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of the country’s highest honours for educators. Duncan was recognized for his work leading the Historytellers Project, which invited his Grade 10 students to research stories from The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archive. With guidance from activists and community leaders, students created exhibits that shared overlooked narratives of queer and trans Canadians, encouraging empathy, critical thinking, and inclusive storytelling.

Duncan is one of just eight teachers nationwide to receive the award this year. Each recipient receives a $2,500 prize, along with $1,000 for their school. His approach helps students “deconstruct and construct” history by exploring who gets remembered, how, and why, turning them into active storytellers of Canada’s diverse past.

Burlington’s Heather Howell of M.M. Robinson High School was also among the eight honoured educators. Great job Halton!

🏒 Greg Westlake Named to Paralympic Team

Source: Hockey Canada

Oakville’s Greg Westlake is heading to his sixth and final Paralympic Winter Games, coming out of retirement to rejoin Canada’s national para hockey team. The 39-year-old veteran, who first competed in Italy back in 2006, will once again chase gold when the 2026 Games kick off in Milano-Cortina on March 6.

A gold, bronze, and two-time silver medalist, Westlake stepped away after the 2022 Games to coach but returned to play one last time. As Canada's second all-time leading scorer with 369 points in 240 games, he'll be the only player on the roster with gold medal experience. A legendary run, now coming full circle.
