🧗 Oakville School’s Elite Climbing Program

MacLachlan College has launched Canada’s first school-based climbing program, complete with a state-of-the-art indoor wall and coaching by World Cup climbers Zach and Madison Richardson. Integrated directly into the gym curriculum, it lets students train during school hours, combining academics with elite-level athletic development in a way not seen elsewhere in the country.

Based in Oakville, the program aims to build the sport from the grassroots and attract young climbers from across Canada. With Olympic-level coaching and daily access to training, MacLachlan hopes to become a hub for future high-performance athletes in one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.

🇨🇦 What’s Open/Closed on Labour Day

We hope everyone gets a chance to relax and enjoy the last long weekend of summer. Whether you're planning a backyard BBQ or a quiet day by the lake, here’s a quick heads-up: most grocery stores, malls, Beer Stores, and LCBOs will be closed on Monday, but a couple of spots like Farm Boy Bronte and Fortinos Lakeshore will stay open. Oakville Transit will run holiday service from 8am-8pm.

🌿 Connecting Seniors with Nature

Conservation Halton is expanding its Nature Stewards program, which helps seniors in long-term care and retirement residences reconnect with nature through guided walks, gardening, and interactive workshops. Since launching in 2024, the program has reached over 600 Halton seniors, many of whom have limited access to outdoor spaces.

Thanks to recent provincial funding, the program remains free for participants and runs until March 2026. With only two spots left under current funding, Conservation Halton is actively seeking new retirement community partners.

🔥 Teens Train at Blaze Fire Academy

Twenty-five teens from across Halton suited up for two action-packed days at Oakville’s Blaze Fire Academy earlier this month, diving into fire suppression drills, EMS training, and communications workshops. Hosted at the Oakville Fire Training Campus, the annual program is a joint effort by Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills fire departments to give youth aged 15-18 a close-up look at emergency services careers.

Participants rotated through stations led by experienced volunteers and instructors, gaining insight into teamwork, leadership, and the many roles within fire service. From handling fire hoses to dispatch training, many left with a deeper respect for the field, and a clearer sense of what path they might follow next.
