🎄 Kerr Village Tree Lighting Returns
Kerr Village’s beloved Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Market is back for its 31st year, lighting up Westwood Park on Saturday, November 29 from 1-6pm. The day includes a full lineup of live music, festive characters like Santa and the Grinch, and a Pop Up Market filled with seasonal cheer. The tree lighting itself is set for 5:30pm on the main stage.
New this year is a covered performance stage and a mobile health team offering free flu shots. Free drinks and treats will once again be handed out by Tim Hortons, and visitors can donate to Kerr Street Mission’s Christmas Wonders program.
🚦 Oakville Receives $891K
Oakville will receive nearly $900,000 from the province to help offset costs from scrapping its speed camera program, which officially ended on Nov. 14. The funding comes from Ontario’s Road Safety Initiatives Fund, aimed at supporting alternatives like traffic-calming measures and digital speed displays. Though the town welcomed the funds, it noted they fall short of what’s needed, with $4.9 million proposed for 2026 traffic safety upgrades.
Councillors say the loss of automated speed enforcement is a blow to both safety and budget. The now-axed program issued over 36,000 tickets since January, generating more than $4.2 million in fines, though just over half has been collected. Equipment has been removed, and the town has no plans to reuse it. Tickets issued before Nov. 14 must still be paid, with outstanding fines enforced through licence plate denial.
🏗️ Oakville Pushes Back on Tower Plan

Town of Oakville image
Oakville is seeking a high-level meeting with the province to challenge a revised plan that could bring 11 towers up to 59 storeys tall near the Oakville GO station. Council unanimously backed a motion on Nov. 17 directing Mayor Rob Burton to invite provincial ministers, MPPs, and senior staff to discuss the controversial Midtown Oakville proposal, which town officials say ignores local planning principles and overwhelms infrastructure.
The town had already rejected a similar version last year and instead approved a more gradual growth plan for the broader Midtown area. Residents’ associations also voiced strong opposition, arguing the provincial plan is unrealistic and unsustainable. Council hopes a meeting could steer the province toward a more balanced approach, though Mayor Burton cautioned that true collaboration means being open to compromise.

🧵 Oakville Workshop Wins Culture Award
Oakville’s textile arts workshop Threads of Tradition: Introduction to Phulkari Embroidery with Rafia Shafiq has won Best Collaborative Program at the 2025 Ontario Culture Days Spotlight Awards. Held at Glen Abbey Rec Centre, the hands-on event introduced participants to the vibrant embroidery style of Phulkari, guided by artist and Dhaga Art founder Rafia Shafiq. It was part of a broader regional effort involving Halton municipalities and heritage services.
The award recognizes interdisciplinary programs that highlight creative partnerships and community engagement. Oakville’s win stands out among over 2,000 free events across Ontario, celebrating cultural diversity and participation. Congratulations to Rafia and all local partners who helped bring this beautiful tradition to life.
🥫 Oakville Hockey Teams Fuel Food Drive
Hundreds of young hockey players from teams like the Oakville Rangers and Hornets packed Holy Trinity’s gym on Nov. 21 for the 20th annual Gift of Giving Back food drive. Together, they donated thousands of food items for local organizations including Kerr Street Mission, Food for Life, and Feed Halton, marking two decades of youth-led giving across the region.
This year’s event honoured the memory of 8-year-old Melody Xu, an Oakville Hornets player who recently passed away, with a moment of silence and memorial display. Town leaders and MPs’ representatives praised the volunteers and organizers, noting the growing need as food insecurity rises. GOGB has now donated over 5 million pounds of food since 2005.
