🧾 What’s in Oakville’s 2026 Budget?

Source: insidehalton.com
Oakville’s proposed 2026 budget includes a 3.5% property tax increase, which works out to about $29 more for every $100,000 of assessed home value. The town plans to spend $462 million on day-to-day operations and $341 million on major projects. That includes big-ticket items like roadwork, stormwater upgrades, and a brand new Central Library downtown.
The library is part of a $71.2 million investment, second only to the $87.2 million set aside for roads, sidewalks, and bike lanes. Other highlights include money for a new Trafalgar community centre, a North Operations Depot, and transit improvements. A separate stormwater fee is also being considered, which could slightly lower the tax increase if approved. Public input runs from Oct. 24 to Nov. 26.
🏡 Historic Macdonald Farmhouse Set for Protection
Oakville council has announced plans to give heritage status to the 1891 Hillside Farmhouse, a red brick landmark at Chartwell and Macdonald Roads. Built by John Macdonald and Janet Morrison, the house belonged to the family that gave Macdonald Road its name. Macdonald, a butcher, rancher, and former deputy reeve, once owned a 50-acre estate where the home still stands today.
The farmhouse is a well-preserved example of Queen Anne architecture, with ornate gables, stained glass, and original features like the old farm laneway. Over time, it served as both a family home and a nursing facility before the land was gradually subdivided. The heritage designation aims to preserve this rare link to southeast Oakville’s rural roots.

🏒 Oakville’s Nick Lardis Off to Hot AHL Start
Oakville native Nick Lardis has wasted no time making an impact in the AHL, scoring his first professional goal in just his fourth game with the Rockford IceHogs. The 19-year-old forward followed it up the next day with another goal and three assists, capping off a breakout weekend that now has him leading the entire league in points.
With eight points in five games, Lardis is quickly turning heads in his rookie season. His sharp shooting and confident play mirror the style that made him a standout in the OHL. If he keeps up this pace, a call-up to the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks might not be far off.
