🎉 Emancipation Day Picnic Still On
The annual Halton Emancipation Celebration Festival, usually held at Spencer Smith Park in Burlington, has been cancelled for 2025 due to a lack of funding. Organized by the Halton Black History Awareness Society, this marks the first time the event has been called off for financial reasons. The group hopes to bring it back next year for a special 10th anniversary celebration.
Still, Emancipation Day will be celebrated locally. Oakville’s long-running Emancipation Day picnic is going ahead as planned this Monday, August 4 from 1-4pm at the Oakville Museum’s Erchless Estate. Hosted by the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton, it’s a separate event from the cancelled festival and promises an afternoon of music, food, and reflection by the lake.

🌱 Two Nature Events to Join This Week

Oakville residents have two fun ways to connect with nature this week. Starting today, August 1, Ontario Parks launches its 30x30 Nature Challenge, encouraging everyone to spend 30 minutes outside each day for 30 days. Whether it’s a walk in Bronte Creek Provincial Park or time in your own backyard, the goal is to boost wellness through daily outdoor time. Participants can share their experiences using #OP30x30NatureChallenge.
Also underway is the Big Backyard BioBlitz, running until Sunday, August 4. This nationwide event invites people to snap photos of plants and wildlife and upload them to help track biodiversity. It’s open to all ages and can be done anywhere, from trails to balconies. Last year’s BioBlitz recorded over 21,000 species sightings in Ontario alone.
